As Central Florida’s tastes in art and design become ever more sophisticated, it’s fun to check in with designers to see what they are working with in contemporary design trends. When talking with interior designers, two popular topics today are colors from Tuscany and a faux finish called Venetian Plaster. Both the colors and the plaster technique bring to mind romantic ideas of old Europe, as we would like to imagine it. We’ve all seen and admired the look of Venetian plastering, so Lifestyle Publications decided to follow the actual process and learn what goes into creating that much-desired wall finish.
Designer Richard Keller was recently asked to bring a new and more dramatic look to a dining room in Metrowest. “The owner was ready to show off the cathedral ceilings in the dining room,” Keller says. “He already had an eclectic mix of the contemporary, a glass dining table and abstract art, with traditional dark wood chairs and a sideboard that had been in his family. He had been to dinner at the new La Dolce Sera and talked about how impressed he was with the Venetian Plaster walls. It was a lucky coincidence that his dining room chairs were already covered in a color that could bring drama when carried onto the wall … and done in Venetian Plaster. He said go for it ... and we did.”
